Culinary Experiments : Dal Dhokli Recipe

DAL DHOKLI

New found love in the easy peasey Dal Dhokli - where boiling of the ingredients together does most of the wonders.
This dish was introduced to me by a friend during one of my on US trips. Having some free weekends at my disposal and all my friends busy, got me to try this new dish.πŸ˜ƒ

After seeing lot many Youtube - I came up with my version of the same. 😎

INGREDIENTS:

  • Moong Dal/Toor dal - 1 Cup
  • 1 Cup Flour, 1/4 cup gram flour
  • Kasturi Methi
  • 1 Onion chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Jeera Seeds, 1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • Sliced ginger
  • Peanuts
  • 1 Tomato chopped
  • Oil
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • Green/red chili

RECIPE:

1. Soak the Moong Dal for about 30 minutes and post that pressure cook it for up to 2 whistles.

Add 1 spoon each of turmeric powder, red chili powder to the dal.

2. For the dough - you would need
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup gram flour
  • pinch of turmeric powder
  • 1 table spoon oil
  • few ajwain seeds
  • chopped coriander leaves
Once the dough has been kneed-ed allow it to rest for about 15 minutes.

By the time the dal is set to simmer, the dough must have rested for a good amount of time, 😁- roll them into a big roti and cut triangular pieces from it.
Sprinkle enough flour to keep them from sticking to each other. Boil these separately in about 2-3 cups of water on high flame for about 5 minutes.

Strain the excess water and set aside in the strainer itself.

3. Meanwhile, take a pan and it add about 2 tablespoon of oil/ghee. Once it is hot enough add few jeera seeds along with red/green chilies as desired.

4. As the seeds start to crackle, add about a handful of peanuts. Allow it to fry for a while - till they have turned slightly brown or you can notice the openings in the peanuts. You could choose to just fry them and set aside and add it later for garnishing to the dal dhokli. I chose to have it added all through the process.
6. Time for the chopped onions - add a teaspoon of salt for it to caramelise faster.

7. As the onions turn brown - add the finely sliced ginger - fry for a while and then to it add the chopped tomatoes or puree.
Add a 1 to 1.5 teaspoon of coriander powder. Mix - fry!!
8. As the oil starts separating - add the boiled dal to it.

9. Let the dal simmer for about 5-6 minutes.

10. Add the triangular beauties to the boiling dal.
11. Turn off the stove - garnish with tablespoon of ghee, chopped coriander leaves, chilies & onions , crushed kashturi methi and lime juice if you will.

~Bon Appetite!!
