Wanderlust Tales : Trip to unexplored land of Odisha - Bhubaneshwar - Day 2

DAY 2

THINGS TO DO IN BHUBANESWAR:

Today was all about food and only food - although I didn't cover all the places for the local food - but how much I could cover in my 3-5 meals that I could stuff myself with. 😝

HHI, has 2 or 3 in house restaurants which serve delicious food - either wise if you are not in for any of it - for satiating your hunger pangs - there is a Dominos just across Mehr .😍

Read about day 1 exploration:
  • Breakfast at HHI - Flavours
Next morning started off the day with a hearty breakfast at our hotel in HHI - it was mix of continental, local and south India cuisine.

Loved the Methi Puri, Aloo Matar Sabji, aloo beans bhaja and medu wada in the breakfast which gave a touch of the local food culture. I wouldn't say it was the most authentic - but as they something is better than nothing.
  • Local Sweets - Bikalananda Sweets
Bhubaneshwar is a hub for a foodie and especially a mitha lover. After a quick breakfast without wasting much time - we set to Bikalananda near to our stay - at about a distance of 2.5 kms. A small shop tucked in a complex - simple and limited items but each dish finger licking good.

Chenna Jhilli, Rosogullas, Kala Jamuns , Arsa pitha and the variety of mixture - you just can't get enough. The delicate delicacies dunked in the perfect sugar chasni was a treat to the taste buds - oh boy, had missed them for more than a decade.  Damn - take me back here!

Address: G-11, Metro Classic Building
Rupali Street, Saheed Nagar
Bhubaneshwar
The heart of every conversation between an Odia and a Bengali - who invented Rosogullas - and these guda rosgullas could be a good diversion from the topic - a much fruitful affair.
Arsa Pitha is another of the pithas made widely here - you would find this dish being made in southern India as well - especially states neighbouring Odisha. This dish is prepared using rice flour, jaggery - beaten into round shapes and deep fried - seasoned with sesame seeds - has crispy edges and softer inner core.

I would say, my Maa still makes the best I have eaten.

  • Local Sweets - Ganguram Sweets
Ganguram Sweets is a chain, which you would find in almost corner of the city, wouldn't say much of a fancy sweet shop - just like another gali ki nukkad ka shop but gem of sweets - we were told that the chenna poda are found best here.

Can I ever say to cheese cake - the burnt edges give such a texture to the dish - made with something simple as milk, cashwe, raisins, sugar and roasted thoroughly - everything you need to make your day mishti!! Since the shelf life of the dish is limited, we had to compromise on the amount of take away.

  • Dalma
Dalma is one of those restaurants you must visit to try the authentic cuisine of Odisha - a seven outlet chain spread in states in the country. It has been quite instrumental in popularising the Odia cuisine.

Good quality and unforgettable experience is what you would get here. Quite a canteen like feel you might get with the decor - but the servers are very well mannered.

We tried 2 thali - the Special Thali and the Dahi Pakhala Thali priced at Rs.250 and Rs.150/- each.

Pakhala is basically cooked rice fermenting in water and curd - giving it a distinct flavour. It is regularly had in summer because of the cooling effect. There are variety of ways this can be made.

The Pakhala Thali in Dalma was exquisite but pricey I would say - although too much serving of pakhala for one person - but each of the bhaja, dalma, khatta, badi chura was mind blowing. The pakhala had a mustard seeds, kari patra tempering. The combination of rice and the side dishes was surreal.

They do have menu for dishes of the day ranging from mushroom speciality, prawns, chicken and mutton dishes.

  • Dahi Bada Ghugni Chaat
The Dahi Bada Ghugni Chaat is one of the favourite chats in the state - dahi badas served on a bed of chatapata masalas & chutney, ghugni, chopped onions, yoghurt, chili and cumin powder, aloo mixture, sev, grated coconut. A highly savoury flavourful khatta-mitha chat - one thing that I saw bhaina doing was that the dahi badas were  soaked in water to ensure they melt in the mouth along with the other ingredients in the chaat. Delectable!! You would find multiple street side vendors selling this wonder.

  • Gol Gappas
Gol guppas need no introduction - irresistible!!

Address : Next to the Lingaraj Lassi, Saheed Nagar
Bhubaneshwar
  • Rolls, Mughlai Paratha, Samosa, Aloo Bara
Rolls is another famous evening time snacks - which I missed having on my this trip. The variety is unmissable - I remember having delicious Mughlai parathas, egg rolls from some food truck in Saheed nagar,

Do try the samosa from any of the local shops - the speciality being, they don't add mashed potatoes but stuff with well seasoned chopped aloo mix.

That's all for today. πŸ™ˆ

Cheers to life!!
