Culinary Experiments : Har ghar ki jaan - Dal Fry Recipe

DAL FRY

Dal is a staple food in every Indian household - lunch at our home is mandated with dal as an accompaniment.

This tadke-maar ke dal is mouth watering-ly good.

RECIPE WITH STEP BY STEP PICTURES:

Boil pre-soaked toor dal or dal of your choice perfectly. Pre-soaking has helped me in getting the dal cooked faster.

2 whistles works for me.
Set aside the dal.

In a heated pan - add about 3 tablespoon of oil/ghee - I prepared it in mustard oil.

Next in it add the 1/2 teaspoon of asafoetida, 1/2 - 1  teaspoon of mustard seeds, once they start to crackle add the 1/2 - 1 teaspoon of jeera seeds.
As the jeera seeds start to splutter, add 1-2 teaspoon of finely chopped garlic and an inch of ginger finely chopped.
Add the chopped onions - fry them for about 2-3 minutes.
Once the onions have turned brown and the garlicky smell is gone - time for the chopped tomatoes and chillies.

Add:
1/2 teaspoon of red chili powder
1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
 Salt as per taste
1 teaspoon of coriander powder
Once the masala has fried and starts leaving oil, add the dal - give it a good stir.
Now add the 2 teaspoon of kasturi methi, 1/2 teaspoon of amchur powder(optional), 1 tsp of garam masala.
As the dal is simmering, add chopped coriander leaves - it adds that freshness to the dal.
Allow it to simmer for 5-6 minutes.
