After a blissful evening on the Mandrem Beach, the second day - we set out to explore Goa. π
The agenda of the day was to cover:
- Arvalem Caves
- Arvalem Waterfall
- Dudhsagar Falls
HOW TO GET HERE:
At a distance of about 41 km or so, are the Arvalem Caves. We religiously followed the Google Maps which suitably took us to the caves.
The road took us through the narrow roads of the city to its outskirts via the utmost tree clad roads. We could see the untouched beauty of Goa unearth with each kilometer driven. π

We had rented bikes to go around Goa - the most apt way to travel around if not comfortable. π
Beware, there is a grave absence of eateries on the way to the caves. You would find plentiful of petrol bunks, but eateries is zilch. So either pack your food or eat heartily before leaving. π
Sun and greenery - that's what you experience through the drive! ππ
The caves are located near Bicholim Taluka.
TIMINGS:
09:00 to 13:00 hrs
14:00 to 17:00 hrs
ARVALEM CAVES:
It was surprising that apart from the rich and cultural Portuguese history presence, there is significant history dating from other era too.π
The Arvalem caves are believed to be carved back in the 6th century with the originality of the caves to have been narrowed to ambiguous possibilities - either of Buddhist origin or of Brahman origin. Theories also have it, that the five chambers of the caves were occupied by the Pandavas - Yudhishtir, Arjun, Bhim, Nakul and Sahadev. It is during their exile they sought refuge here.
The caves consist of the two major caves and a residential chamber.
It is interesting to find granite Shivlingas present in the chambers of the caves - which attaches it to the Brahman origin. The locals hold high importance about these Shivlingas even today.
It is intriguing too see how the caves have been carved out of a single rock and are so simple in its make.
Mind you, walking bare foot is slightly difficult.
