Food anatomization : South Thindies,Basavanagudi - Bangalore
Must have crossed this place a trillion times on our way to the bus stand or railway station. It would always arouse our curiosity as to why this place is just buzzing with people.
So to find our answer, we visited the place. We did not even know the name of the place until we got the bill which had the name "South Thindies".
There is no board over the eatery, just a huge décor piece . If you observe closely you would see how brilliantly it displays the nitty gritty of things commonly used in the kitchen - kadhai, chulha ,deep ,cylinder etc.
Thindi - in kannada means snacks. But the place serves the same menu at all hours of the day.They had around 10 items on display to choose from.
They have arranged for tall tables where you can stand and eat - no work done on the interiors. It is divided in sections : the left side serves the coffee, right is the billing counter and the center is the kitchen.
They also have a separate section for hand wash.
Self service - bill for what you would like to have and collect your food item against the coupon.
You can see their kitchen, seemed quite clean - albeit disappointed that the guy making the dosas for us wasn't really wearing gloves.
We ordered for the rava idly,akki idly, masala dosa and the mandate coffee.
The rava idly was tasty, mostly idly with coriander leaves - served along with coconut chutney and a nice bhaji. The bhaji was really delicious - mainly onions, tomatoes. Amazing!
The akki idly was a one single idly dipped in sambhar - plain and the usual.
The masala in the masala dosa had an extra dose of salt. The dosa otherwise was crispy, but the masala killed it. It was served with coconut chutney and a red paste chutney.But we asked for extra servings of sambhar to go along,since the red chutney did not appease us.
The coffee was good - brewed to the right amount.
In totality, it was a good experience exploring one of the legendary joints in Bangalore. But it really did not live up to my expectations which I had concluded after seeing the crowd. Never the less...
