A rightful portrayal of how families are in the stark reality - if you don't believe me, then watch it for yourself?! 😊

Directed by Shakun Batra - this movie is a breath of fresh air. Portraying the problems of a family can never be an easy task, and I must say the movie depicts it with ease.It captures the essence of a truly dysfunctional family.

Kapoor & Sons is a melodramatic movie. It starts with Dadu, a 90-year-old man, played by the ever charismatic Rishi Kapoor. With the heavy makeup and prosthetic, Rishi Kapoor has justified the role in all rights. Dadu suffers a timely heart attack - after all his frivolous attempts to evoke death.
Dadu is the typical Punjabi who has served in the army, is jolly with a huge fetish for Mandakini from Ram Teri Ganga Maili! πŸ˜‰
Rush in the grandsons with the news of Dadu's heart attack - Rahul and Arjun, played by Fawad Khan and Siddharth Malhotra respectively.
Rahul is a novelist settled in London, busy working on ideas for his next book, whereas the younger lad Arjun does all odd jobs and earns a living for himself in New Jersey. He is focusing on being an aspiring novelist himself. The initial scenes show a strange dislike that Arjun has for his older brother, seems an ego clash probably?!

Based in Coonoor - sadly, the movie does not capture the beauty of the hill station.
Harsh and Sunita, the parents played by Ratna Pathak and Rajat Kapoor are just flawless and play the pivotal roles effortlessly.
The parents are coping with their marriage, infidelity tryst, financial crunch, and the brothers are coping with trust issues. Both the pairs are trapped in their issues!
But to note, in spite of the differences, they all try to behave normal and act as one in the every circumstance. Is this the silence, before hell breaks loose?!

A party song "Kar Gayi Chull" and Tia Malik aka Alia Bhatt is introduced on screen. She has a chubby, happy and flirtatious character. Rahul happens to meet Tia who also happens to be the local estate owner whose estate - Rahul is interested to purchase for his Artist Retreat corner. As in all typical Bollywood movies, the trio creates quite a buzz and a rifle between the brothers.

Only a drop of a pin was needed to unleash the monster. And then there was no stopping to the hard conflicts, bickering, arguments, and disagreements be that anywhere - at dinner tables, kitchen or even at parties.
Arjun, rightfully states - "Normally meri family aise behave nahin karti - correction, sorry public main aise behave nahin karti hai."
Isn't that true - isn't it that who we all are, forever trying to portray our true feelings in a positive manner, trying to show the world that we are one happy family - but can every day be a sunny day?!

Dadu always has had, two dying wishes - one to be buried with his army friends and second to have a family photo with the title "Kapoor & Sons - since 1921".
And this is where the true climax unfolds, in the process to fulfill Dadu's wishes.
You can say the movie has typical Karan Johar-ish moments embedded in it - which is partly also the essence of the movie. Truly Fawad's Hindi is to die for - the poise in his language is breathtaking.
Touching points from parenting are highlighted.
It is hard to see how Sunita who has always considered her elder son Rahul to be her ever a perfect child, the perfect baccha - is broken to pieces when she knows the truth of the life, her son is leading.
It is definitely going to bring a tear down when you see, Rahul trying to explain to his Maa - how he is tired of being the perfect one and how sorry he is for all the secrets he has held back from her - but he is who he is.
These lines evoke a saga of emotions :
"Maa, main is perfect bacche ke label se thak gaya hun. Please, nahin chahiye yeh sab - thak gaya hun apne aap se dur bhag ke, aap se dur bhag ke - logon ke dar se - main jo hun , woh hun Maa - and I want you to love me for who I am."
Touche, anything be the context - but parents often forget in their attempt to raise the perfect child - what the child actually wants. This as per me, should be the most eccentric part of bringing up of a child - WHO HE/SHE WANTS TO BE?!  It is disheartening to see how our parents furiously start to blame themselves and point fingers at their upbringing if there is anything wrong that crops up. Sometimes it is just nobody's fault - somethings are just meant to be - so let time take care of those. Let everyone take their decisions, eventually, you have to lead your life, nobody can do it for you - not even the parents.
Amidst all this confusion, Arjun finds traces of Rahul attempting to steal his novel ideas AGAIN(which Arjun believes is how Rahul got his first novel idea) - and this time he is in a furious rage. This is when Sunita breaks it to her kids - that it was her, who gave Arjun's book's idea to Rahul because he was stuck.
Ratna Pathak, pleadingly justifies - that she did it only because of him, Arjun who never took anything he put his hands on seriously. She thought writing as a phase which shall pass too. What was even more saddening was to see, how Arjun always wanted to prove himself to her and make her proud and outshine her perfect baccha Rahul.

Parenting is tough and handling and nurturing children's emotions are all the more tougher. Rightfully said - "Sorry, won't fix this Maa".
It is the parent child relationship which takes a front seat in the movie - how things unfold and how easily they complicate.
Things take a tragic turn when Rajat meets with a fatal accident. Sunita is left devastated in Conoor. She is trying to cope with her loss silently and on the other side, her son's leave to lead their respective lives. Family seems broken!

It is Dadu's call to his grandsons for that one last time, that brings the entire family together yet again and the family portrait is completed!

Truth is, in whatever way or however distorted our family maybe or rather appear to be - family is always first. Just a little TIME is all that is needed.

Well and it is not new, life is definitely not a bed of roses, who doesn't face problems - but it is how we overcome them matters!

Heartwarming and an emotional chronicle - got me teary eyed, ab rulaoge kya?!
